Brett Ratten's plans for 2023 are still unclear despite reported interest from several AFL clubs following his departure from St Kilda.

Reports from The Herald Su have suggested that Carlton have reached out to their former player and head coach about a possible return to Ikon Park next year, with the Blues already signing Tom Lonergan as a development and talent manager this week.

Ratten played at the Carlton Football Club from 1990 to 2003 and played 255 games in the Navy Blue, winning a premiership in 1995. He then coached the club from 2007–2012 and then later the St Kilda football club from 2019–2022, before being sacked at the end of this season to make way for returning St Kilda coach Ross Lyon.

The 51-year-old had only just re-signed with St Kilda and had two years remaining on his contract as head coach when the Saints told him his services would no longer be required.

Lyon was announced shortly after this, rejoining the club he coached from 2007–2011 to three grand finals.

Ratten also strong links with North Melbourne due to the appointment of Alastair Clarkson as head coach. Having spent time as an assistant coach at the Hawthorn Football Club under Clarkson during the club's historic threepeat from 2013-2015, Ratten is familiar with the mastermind mentor's game style.

However, this may prove a difficult appointment as the Kangaroos' soft cap said to be at breaking point with the new appointment of Clarkson as head coach, and Todd Viney as the new football general manager.

Ratten is currently in Bali with his family and has made no indication of where his future in footy will be.
