Former Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley has put a line through any chance of a return to coaching for next year.

The Magpies great called time on his tenure with Collingwood midway through last season, ending a 10-year stint in the hot seat that spanned 218 games and a grand final appearance in 2018.

The 49-year-old has since stepped into media roles with both Fox Footy and SEN, and had initially left the door open to coaching for the near future.

The recent departure of Leon Cameron at Greater Western Sydney had placed Buckley's name among potential candidates for the New South Wales job, with four-time premiership coach Alastair Clarkson and ex-Essendon coach James Hird also linked to the vacancy.

However, speaking on Best on Ground on Saturday night, Buckley stated that he won't be returning to coaching in 2023, opting to continue to place his focus on working in the media.

“Nup. I won’t be coaching next year. I’m enjoying (being) on this couch too much," Buckley said when asked if he'd be interested in the Giants position.

“I don’t feel the need to bring that stress back into my life at this point.

“If I don’t have that in my heart then I can’t do it for myself first and foremost, but I wouldn’t be doing the right thing by an organisation walking in if you were three-quarters ready.

“I can’t see myself doing it next year.”

Clarkson has already expressed a desire to return to coaching, making it clear earlier this week that he would return if he felt a team he would join could win the premiership.

The Giants boast a list capable of entering a premiership window in the coming years, being home to a balance of emerging stars and ready-made talent.

Hird, who has taken on a consultancy role with the Giants this year, could be in the frame to succeed Cameron should he look to undertake his second coaching stint in the AFL.

Departing league CEO Gillon McLachlan has supported a potential coaching comeback for the Bombers great, who departed his position as senior coach of Essendon in 2015 following the club's supplement saga.

Giants assistant Mark McVeigh, who will take on the position as caretaker coach following Sunday's match with Carlton, is also likely to be in consideration for the vacancy.

The Round 9 clash at GIANTS Stadium will be Cameron's farewell match after nine seasons as senior coach of the club.
