Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley has provided an update on injured veteran Daniel Wells.

The 34-year old starred in the first half of Friday night's win over the Swans at the SCG, booting three goals in just his first game of the season.

However, Wells hurt his knee his knee in the third quarter after getting tackled by Sydney's Jackson Thurlow and did not return to the game.

Buckley was unable to confirm the severity of the injury.

"There's some damage to the knee. We don't know exactly what it is. He was unable to complete the game so we'll need to let that settle and give the docs a chance to make a final assessment," Buckley told reporters post-match.

"He had a real impact in that first half and was significant, kicking three and giving a couple off. His pressure was good, he looked up and about, so that was encouraging

The ex-Roo missed most of 2018 with a Lisfranc foot injury in his left foot and has been ramping up his fitness in the VFL.

He comes out of contract at the end of this season.
