Legendary commentator Bruce McAvaney has named the best team he's ever seen and the result may surprise a few.

The broadcaster named Essendon's 2000 premiership side as the best team he has ever seen play.

The Bombers lost just once during the home and away season before beating Melbourne by 60 points in the Grand Final.

McAvaney acknowledged the Bombers strength on and off the field as the reason for his pick as the best team of all time.

โ€œEssendon (in 2000) were just an amazing team and they were an absolute powerhouse,โ€ McAvaney toldย Channel 7.

โ€œTheyโ€™re the best (Iโ€™ve seen), I canโ€™t remember a stronger team on and off the field than them in 2000.

โ€œWeโ€™ve had Richmond very recently, before that Hawthorn with three (premiership), Geelong had that period of domination and Brisbane Lions had three (premierships).

โ€œOn and off the field around that 1999-2000 time, Essendon is the strongest Iโ€™ve ever seen any club.โ€

The Bombers won 62 out of a possible 74 games between 1999 to 2001 and made two Grand Finals (2000-2001).

However, unlike the Brisbane Lions (2001-2003), Geelong (2007-2011) and Hawthorn (2013-15) teams that won multiple premierships during their dominance, the Bombers only have one premiership to show for their success.
