Brisbane coach Chris Fagan has provided some insight into the tough conversations he has regarding the club's balance in the midfield.

The reigning premiers arguably boast the deepest in terms of their on-ball brigade, headed by two-time Brownlow Medal winner Lachie Neale and Norm Smith medallist Will Ashcroft.

That's not even mentioning the consistent Hugh McCluggage, stopper Josh Dunkley, the powerful pair of Cameron Rayner and Zac Bailey, utilities Jaspa Fletcher and Jarrod Berry, and lastly Levi Ashcroft.

The father-son gun joined Brisbane as a dominant inside midfielder, but due to the talent coursing through the Queensland club's midfield, he has spent large amounts of time on the wing and across half forward and half back.

Fagan, speaking on Channel 7's The Agenda Setters, said that Ashcroft had to "earn the right" to feature in the Lions midfield, but will benefit immensely from developing multiple positions.

"It's difficult (to balance the midfield)," Fagan said.

"For instance, Levi Ashcroft has come to us as an inside mid and is playing on the wing at the moment. And he desperately wants to get inside, I know he does, but he's going to have to learn to play some other positions before he earns the right.

"It's actually great for [Levi] to learn to play half forward, to learn to play wing, because when he does become an inside midfielder, he can go elsewhere if he's being tagged.

"In the long run, it will be great for his development.

"They've become a pretty selfless group, our players. They work very hard for each other. I think everyone is getting a fair bite of the inside minutes.

"We've got another good midfielder come along next year, Dan Annable, who I think is going to be a first-round pick.

"So we've got to find ways for them to develop their talents."

The Lions ended a two-game losing streak with an impressive thumping of Geelong at Kardinia Park, which places them in second place.
