Hawthorn veteran Luke Hodge will miss his side's clash with Richmond on Sunday after failing to overturn his one-match suspension at the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night.

Hodge was handed his third fine of the season after an incident involving Sydney’s Tom Papley in the second quarter of Friday night’s win over the Swans at the MCG.

The 33-year-old was hit with a one-match ban due to it being his third suspension, after the Match Review Panel deemed the incident as careless conduct with low impact to the body.

Due to Hawthorn failing to overturn the decision, Hodge has been hit with a $2500 fine in addition to his one-week suspension, that will see him miss out on Sunday's game.

"We disagreed with the Tribunal about it being a strike, we didn't think it was," Hodge told reporters as he exited AFL House.

"It's disappointing, 'Rough' (Jarryd Roughead) is playing his 250th this week and I guess that was a lot of the reason behind it as well, to try and get out there and play with him.

"That's footy, you take what they give you and look forward to the week after."

Hodge will be eligible for Hawthorn's round 21 clash with North Melbourne the following week.
