As many as five assistant coaches are believed to be in contention for the vacant GWS Giants job, while another is understood to have turned down the opportunity to be part of the club's process to secure their next senior coach.

A number of names have been linked to the position since Leon Cameron's departure, with caretaker coach Mark McVeigh planting his flag as a keen candidate to succeed his now ex-mentor.

Former Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson looms as the favourite for the position, with the four-time premiership coach remaining a strong chance to return to the coaching landscape within the next year.

North Melbourne's now open senior coaching position could be a great temptation for Clarkson to consider, however talks between the former Roo and GWS have already begun.

That won't rule out McVeigh and other candidates from a fair chance, with assistant coaches Daniel Giansircusa (Essendon), Ashley Hansen (Carlton), Adem Yze (Melbourne), Adam Kingsley (Richmond) and Don Pyke (Sydney) all reportedly in the race, according to 7 News.

Kingsley was strongly considered for vacancies at Collingwood and Carlton last year amid a strong tenure beside Damien Hardwick at Punt Road.

Fremantle assistant Jaymie Graham was also tied to the Magpies job which eventually landed with Craig McRae, while the former West Coast assistant was considered for North Melbourne's vacancy before David Noble was appointed as successor to Rhyce Shaw.

According to 7 News' report, Graham has opted to turn down the Giants' advances in favour of remaining at Fremantle and working through their rise to potential premiership success.

Yze, Hansen and Giansiracusa have all plied their trade as right-hand men for several years now, building impressive CVs as they await a chance in the top seat.

Pyke has been a key element in Sydney's stunning bounce back into premiership contention in recent years, aiding John Longmire's side after his departure from Adelaide.

A decision by the Giants is unlikely to come before season's end, with Mcveigh to be given the remainder of the current campaign to stake his claim as a viable option for the Giants to consider.

GWS and McVeigh will be looking to polish their current 5-11 record across the final six weeks of the season, with their next encounter against Brisbane on Saturday at Manuka Oval at 1:45pm (AEST).
