The Brisbane Lions have emerged as the latest potential suitor for Essendon free agent Zach Merrett, with several AFL clubs currently circling the Bombers star.

According to SEN's Sam Edmund, Brisbane have Merrett's signature in their sights in what would be the club's second big-name coup from Tullamarine following the acquisition of Joe Daniher last year.

Merrett, a restricted free agent, is yet to speak publicly on his future, with ongoing speculation opening the door for a number of interested rivals.

Port Adelaide are also understood to be keen on the 25-year-old, while Collingwood, Carlton and Melbourne have shown interest of their own.

Merrett is enjoying another strong season in the red sash this year, with the two-time best and fairest currently ranking elite for disposals, inside 50's, metres gained and effective disposals.

The Bombers will be hoping to retain their star onballer to a lucrative deal after losing three key senior members last year.

Defender Adam Saad and forward Orazio Fantasia joined Daniher in departing Essendon during the 2020 exchange period, with new coach Ben Rutten hoping to build on his young list in 2021.
