The long-standing debate about the AFL Grand Final start time will finally come to an end at the conclusion of the month says AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan.

The AFL boss confirmed to afl.com.au that the League will make a decision on whether to move the Grand Final to a twilight or evening time slot at the next Commission meeting held in late April.

"The start time of the Grand Final is a decision for our industry, we've never put it in broadcast rights, we've never put it into any agreements," McLachlan told afl.com.au.

"It's one of the most important days for our supporters and we'll make the decision we think is right for them."

McLachlan did not disclose his personal beliefs on the topic and also elected not to speak on which way the league is currently intending to go with the decision.

"My personal view is that it's a Commission decision and we'll make the decision then," he explained.

A rather inviting incentive for the AFL to change the starting time of its main event to later in the day is that broadcasting it to a wider national and international audience will be more accessible, along with a potential for more spectacular entertainment.

The 2018 AFL Grand Final is scheduled on Saturday, September 29 at the MCG, but the exact time that the ball will be bounced is still unknown.
