Journalists attending an AFL match are now banned from betting during the game.

Starting from the NAB Challenge, all accredited journalists attending a match for work purposes have been banned from betting on the game.

There is also a five hour blackout period for journalists, commencing two hours prior to the game and ending at the final siren.

"The ban has been introduced to help protect against the potential misuse of information gained by personnel working at a match," the AFL said in a statement.
