The AFL have released a statement relating to news that broke on Wednesday that former Gold Coast Sun Joel Wilkinson was taking legal action against the AFL for alleged racial vilification and sexual harassment during his playing career.
Wilkinson was a member of the Suns for three seasons between 2011-2013, and played 26 senior games.
In a statement from the AFL, they apologised to Wilkinson for the racial abuse he experienced as an AFL player, and will work with Wilkinson to resolve the issue.
"We are sorry that Mr. Wilkinson suffered experiences of racial abuse during his time as an AFL footballer," the statement began.
"He has previously shared his experience of racial abuse, helping educate the community via a series of social awareness videos produced with the AFL.
"We respect a person's right to pursue claims through the legal system.
"We will continue to work with Joel to seek to resolve this matter."
