AFL legend Leigh Matthew's has questioned the latest suggestion for the AFL to allow marquee players into each clubs salary structure, stating the idea is “totally ridiculous”.

The addition of marquee players would see clubs pay their biggest names outside of the salary cap, raising the pay-grade for the AFL's best.

While similar salary structures work for other sporting codes, Matthews believes it would tarnish the game.

“Totally ridiculous,” Matthews said on Sportsday when asked about the prospect.

“I mean, you might as well add a couple of million to the salary cap if you want to do that.

“There’s not point having a salary cap if you’ve then got marquee players extra to it.

“Who is pushing the marquee players issue? It must be player managers or something like that.”

The AFL's salary is set to be slashed by large margins from the outcome of the coronavirus pandemic.
