Four-time premiership coach Leigh Matthews believes the AFL should have suspended Hawthorn's Jack Ginnivan for his actions against Gold Coast on Friday night.
The 23-year-old was involved in a scuffle with Suns young gun Zeke Uwland during the match where he stood over the 19-year-old and repeatedly threw jumper punches into the Sun's chest and jaw.
Speaking on 3AW on Saturday, Matthews was strong in his opinion that the AFL should suspend players for such acts.
"There is an element of sending the message and sending the message is, 'We don't want this happening and give him a week'," Matthews said on the broadcast.
"A fine won't send the message and I've got a feeling because there was the two or three jumper punches wasn't there? It was kind of one of those things, 'I'm gonna do a little bit of damage if I can, but I might get away with it because it's a jumper punch'.
"No, I hope actually, to be honest, that they do give him a week on the basis of sending a message to the rest for the competition, 'Just don't do this'."
Ginnivan escaped the incident with a $1500 fine that can be downgraded to $1000 with an early plea.
Fellow Hawk Josh Weddle is set for an extended stint on the sidelines after his bump on Sun Daniel Rioli resulted in a fractured jaw for the latter.
Weddle has been suspended by the match review officer for three weeks.
Hawthorn might also lose in form half-back Jarman Impey after he failed to finish the game with a hamstring injury.
