St Kilda great Nick Riewoldt has urged Fremantle to cash in on some of their key defenders in the upcoming trade period.

The Dockers are well stocked in the backmen department - boasting the likes of Luke Ryan, Brennan Cox, Joel Hamling, Griffin Logue, Alex Pearce and forward turned defender Jesse Hogan.

Geelong specifically could be looking for fresh blood in the backline as veterans Harry Taylor and Lachie Henderson come towards the end of their illustrious careers.

Riewoldt said that the Dockers should consider trading Pearce as the one who likely holds the most value.

“What about Alex Pearce? He’s (25) years of age, he’s a gun and I think he’s a really good player … but he has (had a lot of injuries). He’s played 13, eight, zero, 21, 11 and then zero games,” he told Fox Footy.

“Does he almost become superfluous to their needs and you get good value while you can?

“I really like him as a player, but they’ve got Brennan Cox, Joel Hamling, they’re talking about playing Jesse Hogan back, they’ve got Griffin Logue.

“Jake Lever was worth two first-round draft picks (for Melbourne), what would someone like Alex Pearce be worth? And are they brave enough to make a decision like that?”
