The AFL has announced that Thursday night team announcements will return from Round 10.

The competition in 2020 changed to rolling team line-up announcements the night before games due to the COVID-affected campaign to allow clubs greater flexibility.

However, team reveals will revert back to the traditional Thursday night slot in an exciting announcement for footy fans.

AFL chief Gillon McLachlan on Tuesday confirmed the changes.

"Thursday night teams is a tradition for fans, tipsters, Fantasy footy players and our League," McLachlan said in a statement.

"Last year, we had to make some necessary changes to assist our clubs in getting through, and part of that was moving the team announcements to combat the four or five-day breaks we were faced with.

"After working through the feedback from fans and other stakeholders over the last few weeks, we conducted some further research and the decision to return to the traditional timeslot was an easy one."

The decision to keep 2020's status quo of rolling teams was met with disenchantment from footy fans, particularly fantasy pundits, with the mid-week team announcements one of the game's greatest traditions.

It showed in a social media poll conducted by the AFL, with 94.5% of fans voting that they prefer Thursday night teams, dwarfing 5.5% of fans who like them coming out 24 hours prior to games.
