While just two matches have been completed, Hawthorn midfielder Will Day has firmly stamped himself as a star to watch with his electric Opening Round performance, earning him a full 20 votes for Zero Hanger's 2025 AFL MVP.

Day's dominant 26 disposals, three goals and six tackles in the Hawks' win over the Swans on Friday night convinced our team to unanimously vote him as best-on-ground. Lloyd Meek's six clearances, impact with the ball and ability to nullify Brodie Grundy saw him receive a total of 12 votes, with Chad Warner polling highest for Sydney (10 votes).

Finn Callaghan was awarded best afield in the Giants' statement win over Collingwood, with his 33 disposals and two goals earning him 19 votes. Sam Taylor was also recognised for his strong efforts in defence, receiving 17 votes and Josh Kelly (11 votes) polled heavily thanks to his 36 disposals.

While Collingwood were thoroughly dismantled by the speed of the Giants' run and carry, Darcy Cameron's excellent play in the ruck with 37 hitouts and 446 metres gained saw him pick up the only votes of the round for the Magpies (2 votes).
