Essendon head coach John Worsfold appears set to sign a contract extension after impressing the club's board in his two season's at the club so far.

Worsfold, who signed a three-year deal with the club prior to the 2016 season, will meet with club CEO Xavier Campbell next week after he returns from America and while the coach has stated he is in no rush to put pen to paper, it seems as though it will happen sooner rather than later.

“That’s coming up," Worsfold told the Herald Sun, in regards to his contract talks.

"Xavier is at the Super Bowl so I am on hold for a week. We have discussed it pre-Christmas and put a plan in place and that will all be pretty smooth, I would expect.”

“You never know how these things unfold.

“I might be done two days after Xavier is back, it may be all sorted. But you never know, we haven’t gone into depth about the club’s aspirations in the medium-term.”

Worsfold has made it no secret of Essendon's desire to rapidly climb the AFL ladder and following a summer full of player movement and a defensive change to their game plan, a

Collingwood's Nathan Buckley was under constant media scrutiny in 2017 over his future and Worsfold said contract situations was irrelevant when it came to discussion over a coaches future.

“That pressure is always there, it doesn’t matter if you have still got a year to go or an extra year.

“If you are clear on where you stand in terms of you and your club communicating strongly all the way through, you can deal with the external pressure.

“Sometimes it annoys fans because they feed off the questions the media are asking but if you are really strong with your communication and everyone knows where it sits the fans can make their (judgments) from that.”
