The story behind Dustin Martin's missing premiership medallion has been uncovered.

2008 Brownlow medallist Adam Cooney has detailed how Martin momentarily lost his medal while revelling on Saturday night.

Martin capped off his torrid late-season run of form by winning the Norm Smith medal with a 22-disposal, four-goal display as Richmond secured its 12th premiership with an emphatic 89-point victory over GWS.

Cooney said he and his wife ended up with the premiership medal after spending part of Saturday night with the Tiger champion, and that the medallion had been safely returned to its owner.

“I finally woke up on a Sunday morning after the Grand Final with a premiership medal,” Cooney told Trade Radio.

“I ended up catching up with Dusty.

"Michael Gardiner’s my brother-in-law and he’s good mates with Dusty, so we went out and had a drink or two with them after the Grand Final.

“Haylea [Cooney's wife] asked Dusty if she could just try the premiership medal on and ended up wearing it for an hour or two.

“We ended up actually taking it home and woke up on the Sunday and had the premiership medal next to the bed.

"There was a brief period there where I just dreamt that I’d actually won a flag, so we stole Dusty’s medal.

“I think he’s got it back now; we delivered it back to him yesterday afternoon.”

Martin averaged just under 20 disposals per game and kicked 12 goals in the Tigers' three finals.
