Essendon has been encouraged to recruit an experienced key forward to propel them to premiership contention in 2022.

The Bombers have a number of exciting, developing forwards on their list, however, SEN's Andy Maher believes they are one experienced key forward away from being premiership contenders next year.

Key forwards are hard to come by but Maher named Levi Casboult, Mason Cox, Josh Jenkins, and Sam Day as possible short-term targets, while Jake Ricciardi, Jacob Koschitzke, and Sam Weideman were considered long term targets.

Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti leads the Bombers' goalkicking tally in 2021, ahead of Cale Hooker and Jake Stringer.

However, Hooker has yet to be offered a new deal and Stringer is out of contract at the end of the season, which could open up space in the salary cap to target a key tall.

Despite their lack of tall firepower, the Bombers sit second for goals kicked in 2021, nine goals behind the Brisbane Lions.
