Collingwood rookie Charlie West was the hero in the Magpies' thrilling three-point win over Sandringham in the VFL on Saturday, booting the match-winning goal after the siren to end his afternoon with six majors.

West kicked two of the last three goals of the game to stave off the Zebras, who took the lead in the 33rd minute via Misilifiย Faimalo.

A set shot from close to 40 metres out from goal sealed the fate of the game in what was a dream day for the first-year forward.

West kicked the opening goal of the day and had his fourth by the midway mark of the third term, with his latest bag of goals in the black and white a career-high at the level for the teenager.

The six goals snapped a three-game run without a major for the South Australian, who had booted 18 goals in his first six VFL games.

Ex-Docker Brady Grey was the only other Magpie to kick multiple of their 14 goals at Olympic Park, with Mason Cox joining West as the only other AFL listed Collingwood player to register a goal.

Brownlow Medal winner Tom Mitchell had a strong outing, recording 27 disposals and 13 tackles, while defenders Jakob Ryan and Wil Parker were also among the best for the winning side.

Young Saint Hugo Garcia amassed 26 disposals, 14 clearances and 10 tackles to stake his claim for an AFL recall.

The win for Collingwood places them in the top seven, recording seven wins from their 11 games this year.
