Carlton has emerged as a club keen to land recently departed Brisbane triple premiership coach, Chris Fagan.
The 65-year-old left the Lions after securing a three-peat of flags and said a desire to return to family in Melbourne was the driving factor in his decision.
It has left most Victorian clubs with incentive to come up with an offer to Fagan, who is one of the most respected figures in the football world.
Speaking on the opening day of the trade period, Carlton general manager Chris Davies said a club would be negligent in their duties if they didn't consider asking Fagan to join their organisation in some capacity.
"Certainly willing to trade a first-round pick for Chris if he comes on the market," Davies joked.
"We're definitely looking at the way that we build out the remainder of our footy program, both Rob Priestley our president and Graham Wright the CEO have been really clear that they want to bring the best available people into our club.
"We're thinking about that in a number of different positions in our footy department at the moment, and I imagine the next two or three weeks, we'll finalise what that needs to look like into the future.
"But when someone like Chris Fagan leaves his club and says that he wants to come back to Melbourne, you'd be derelict in your duty if you weren't open to what that might look like.
"But that's not just Chris, that's other people in the market as well. We've definitely got to put some support around Josh. What we think is the best support for Josh into the future."
Fagan has not said yet whether he is interested in working with an AFL club when he returns to Melbourne.
