Sydney has been dealt a blow as veteran swan Sam Reid has been ruled out of 2023 after requiring surgery on his hamstring after injuring it in the final pre-season match earlier in the year.

The 31-year-old had been placed in a rehabilitation group run by the team's medical staff but failed to make sufficient progress toward a full recovery, having then opted to go for surgery.

It has been confirmed by Executive General Manager Charlie Gardiner that Reid will need a further five months of rehabilitation.

"We had hoped Sam could return from his injury and avoid surgery, but unfortunately it became apparent last week that wasn't the case," Gardiner told Swans Media.

"Sam has done everything in his power and worked exceptionally hard to get back to play, so it's incredibly disappointing for him and the club that he will miss the season."

Reid has played 181 games for the Swans since making his debut in 2010. He last played in the club's grand final loss to Geelong last September.
