Veteran Hawthorn defender Josh Gibson is set to play on in 2017.

The 32-year-old told the Sunday Footy Show that he is close to finalising a new deal with the Hawks.

Gibson is one of three players over 30 years of age at the Hawks who are yet to re-sign, with Luke Hodge and Shaun Burgoyne still yet to finalise deals for next year.

"I'm pretty confident I'll be playing next year," Gibson said.

"But I've said all year that I've just been leaving that to my manager to work out with the footy club.

"We've always said at Hawthorn it's not about age.

"Clarko doesn't look at birth certificates, it's the way you play for the side.

"I've just tried to be consistent this year, as some of the other guys have been."

Gibson has missed just one game this season, averaging 21 disposals and seven marks.
