Giants star Toby Greene is set to undergo surgery on Thursday due to a troublesome ankle.
The injury that originally occurred during the Giants semi-final loss to Collingwood in September has failed to heal during the off season, resulting in Greene requiring surgery.
"It's unfortunate that Toby has suffered this set back but by making this decision now, we don't run the risk of him missing any games," Giants head of athletics performance David Joyce told the club website.
"No doubt once the surgery has been completed, Toby will vigorously attack his rehab."
Despite the difficulties, it is expected that Greene will return to training following the Christmas break.
