Richmond star Dion Prestia is a serious doubt to begin the Tigers' premiership defense after sustaining a hamstring injury, according to Sammy Edmund of SEN.

The injury to Prestia could see him miss 3-4 weeks, which puts his availability for round 1 in serious jeopardy.

Prestia had an interrupted 2020 campaign, with a syndesmosis injury that required surgery and subsequently sidelined him for three months, but was able to return in time for Richmond's run to the premiership.

Prestia, 28, has played 69 games for the Tigers since arriving at the club from the Gold Coast Suns at the end of 2016, winning three premierships and earning  best and fairest honours in 2019.

The Tigers kick off their 2021 campaign against the Blues at the MCG on Thursday, March 18, where Richmond will also unfurl two premiership flags in front of fans in Victoria for the first time since the 2019 Grand Final.
