A Richmond cheer squad member has been banned for three games for yelling “be consistent, you green maggot!’’ towards an umpire, according to the Herald Sun.

In the wake of the suspension, senior members of the Tigers' cheer squad have sent around a memo to fellow supporters to reign in their behaviour moving forward.

“We ask that cheer squad members refrain from making any derogatory comments towards anyone, be it on field or off,’’ the memo said.

“Doing so may result in disciplinary action being taken by the cheer squad, the club or the AFL.’’

The penalty was originally set at one year, before negotiations with the league saw it reduced to just a three-game ban.

AFL spokesperson Jay Allen told the Herald Sun the league had asked clubs to address any type of vilification complaint.

“Cheer squads are a key part of every club,’’ he said.

“Clubs manage the relationship with their cheer squads directly, and any feedback to the AFL is directed on to the club. All fans can and should passionately support their team and the game, but there are standards on language, behaviour and conduct for the enjoyment of all supporters.”

The supporter was banned on Friday, before Richmond's 37-point loss to North Melbourne.
