St Kilda head coach Ross Lyon has doused claims that Essendon veteran Dylan Shiel remains a live chance to become a Saint this off-season, stating that he was "not sure" where the rumours arose from.

Shiel has called Tullamarine home for the past five seasons after trading Sydney's West for life in a red sash during the 2018 trade period.

But while contracted to the Bombers until the end of the 2024 season, the trade winds have linked the Dandenong Stingrays product with a shift back across town, with St Kilda reportedly in the market for the 30-year-old's services.

Still, when speaking to SEN ahead of Monday's Brownlow count, Lyon claimed he had little insight into the mooted trade, stating even if Shiel was on the club's shopping list, the Saints wouldn't be showing their hand publicly.

“Well as a club, we don't sort of conduct our business in the media,” the returned steward said.

“There's a lot of noise around it.

“I know he missed the last 10 rounds with quite a few injuries.

“It (the noise) certainly wasn't generated from us.

“So I'm not sure where that's all come from, to be honest.”

Should the Saints wish to make a deal for the Caulfield Grammar graduate's signature, the lads from Linton Street are currently armed with picks 12, 32, 51 and 87 at the 2023 AFL Draft.

However, given Shiel's inability to play more than 19 games in each of the past four seasons, Essendon may need to send a sweetener if they wish to move Shiel off their books.

At present, the Bombers currently hold the 8th, 28th, 47th, 68th and 83rd selections.

Whether or not the former Giant stays or goes this spring, it appears certain that October's trade period will be a busy one for the Bombers, with Roos pair Ben McKay and Todd Goldstein linked with red and black futures, as well as St Kilda free agent Jade Gresham and his contracted teammate Jack Billings.

It is yet to be seen whether one or both of Gresham or Billings will make up any portion of any package involving Shiel.

Gresham is said to have a deal on the table to remain at Moorabbin, however, is yet to sign on following his exit interview earlier this month.

The 2023 AFL Trade Period is set to commence on Monday, October 9 at 9 AM (AEST).
