Gold Coast and Geelong's clash at GMHBA Stadium might be an early finals test for contending sides pushing for the top four.

With the Cats holding early favouritism over the AFL's 'nepo baby', who are yet to be seen in September, many eyes will be tuned into Saturday afternoon's highly-anticipated contest.

But aside from the all-important four points and accompanying contender credentials that come with the victory, there is another part at play for the visitors.

Starting with the Suns, who since their inception in 2011 have featured at Geelong's home down the highway eight times, are yet to claim a win at the Cattery.

Safe to say, Saturday's opportunity poses as the most likely chance to see the ledger improved.

Amid those eight defeats, three of them have been by margins of 100 points or more, with a percentage of 43.03, indicating the Cats' clear dominance over the Queensland club.

The narrower ground has proven to be difficult for opposition sides to master, but in recent years, it has seen the hosts slip up, proving that the 'Cattery' isn't as much of a fortress as it once was.

A Gold Coast victory would not only break the lopsided affairs that happen in Geelong, but would also give coach Damien Hardwick his first at the venue.

The former Richmond premiership coach wouldn't be expected to feature at Kardinia Park that often, given the size and crowd pull the two Victorian clubs would have.

But on three occasions, the Tigers did venture an hour down the road to face the men in the blue and white hoops: 2010, 2012 and 2017. And all three were losses.

As most have experienced, the perpetually contending Cats find a way to win in front of the home crowd, and although Hardwick and his got close, they couldn't quite get the chocolates.

During its new era, revealing a new logo, guernsey and captain over the summer, it would appear that 2025 is the year of change for the Suns.

New players, revamped game plan and a more consistent output week to week, Gold Coast have already ticked off major milestones by winning more often than not on the road, and a win in Geelong would continue their storied path to a maiden finals campaign, and perhaps, beyond.
