Easter Thursday football has always had long-standing repercussions between Brisbane and Collingwood, dating back to 2002.

The first contest in the April slot was a grand final rematch between the two fierce rivals, played at the Gabba after the Lions won their second consecutive flag.

Collingwood lost the contest by 14 points in a nail-biting battle, reminiscent of the 2002 decider.

Less than 12 months later, but posing as a precursor to the Easter weekend, Brisbane saluted once again against the Pies, replicating the 2003 grand final result with a drubbing of the visitors, claiming the victory by 60 points.

After a pair of grand final losses, Collingwood finished the 2004 season in 13th, as the Lions made their fourth successive decider, but ultimately fell short to Port Adelaide.

Understandably, Collingwood took a 15-year hiatus from the Easter Thursday clash against the Lions as a result of the wounds inflicted by the Queensland club.

Collingwood returned to the slot in 2019 with a dominant performance over the improving Lions.

Ironically, both sides had made the top four and had been knocked out by GWS to single-digit margins as they stormed to their maiden grand final.

Three years later, Chris Fagan's men held on in a thriller by 7 points at the Gabba, which indicated Collingwood's improvement as former Lion Craig McRae took over the club.

"It was always a big occasion, these Thursdays, you're always on show," McRae said.

"The stands are going to be full. Against two arch rivals. It's a great occasion. We love coming up here and playing."

Both sides featured in the penultimate week but were unable to progress.

Then in 2023, the Lions' efficiency tore the hearts out of the Pies in the Easter Thursday clash, which was compounded by a Round 23 victory ahead of the finals.

Four weeks later, the pair of rivals produced arguably the best grand final this century, with Collingwood lifting the cup aloft with a four-point victory, turning the tide from the in-season losses.

In 2024, McRae and the Pies flipped the script, being the only team to beat Brisbane twice in that year, and the most recent to date.

The Lions, seeking redemption for their grand final heartbreak, did what Collingwood achieved 12 months earlier.

Brisbane and the Pies face each other twice in 2025.

But the links between the two sides don't end there.

Collingwood legend Nathan Buckley was initially drafted by the Brisbane Bears.

The immortal Leigh Matthews coached the Pies to a drought-breaking premiership in 1990. A dozen years later, he led the Lions to three consecutive flags, including two victories over his former side.

McRae was a premiership player under Matthews. Now he coaches Collingwood and defeated his old side in the 2023 grand final.

Ahead of that season, Dan McStay made the switch from Queensland to Victoria.

And even now, the once-declared title of comeback kings, initially claimed by Collingwood, has been bestowed upon Brisbane in recent times for their uncanny ability to steal games.

"Are they the comeback kings, are they?" McRae quipped.

"It just shows you that they can win from anywhere. The last eight times in a row were they're behind at halftime and won. That creates a belief.

"We've lived in that space for a number of years, where the margin doesn't seem to far away."
