Police are reportedly investigating an on-field assault during a suburban football match between Wandon Bulldogs and Healesville in the Yarra Ranges Football League in Victoria.

Robbie Ross, a ruckman for the Bulldogs, was punched from behind just 90 seconds into the match, shattering his cheekbone.

He did not see the hit coming, telling AAP he knew straight away he had a broken cheekbone.

Ross is set to undergo surgery on Friday to push the cheekbone back into place.

Healesville Football Club are understood to be cooperating with the investigation.
