Essendon's Andrew McGrath has signed a new two-year contract extension to remain at the Bombers, extending his stay at the Hangar until at least the end of 2024.

The 24-year-old joined the Bombers as the number one draft pick in 2016, going on to play 106 games and ascend to the vice-captaincy.

The star Bomber has played 13 games so far this season, averaging 21.8 disposals per match.

Speaking to club media, McGrath said he was excited to recommit to the Bombers as the club continues to eye a climb up the ladder.

“I’ve loved my six years at the club so far and I’m extremely excited to continue my journey with the Essendon football club. My love for the playing group is immense and I’m very grateful for the faith the club has had in me,” McGrath said.

“I’m determined to push myself and the entire playing group to realise our capabilities and achieve our ultimate goal.

“By no means are we a finished product, but the processes we are putting in place now, despite a tough year, will hold us in a strong position moving forward.

“I believe we are building something special and creating an environment to be successful. It’s an exciting time to be an Essendon person.”

Essendon's general manager of list and recruiting Adrian Dodoro was equally pleased with the contract extension, praising McGrath's natural leadership ability.

“Andy is very highly respected throughout our playing group and the wider club so we are thrilled to have him remain in the red and black for at least another two years,” Dodoro said.

“His natural leadership makes him an exceptional role model for his teammates, which is reflected in his professionalism and respectful nature.

“Andy’s team-first mentality and ability to play multiple roles within the team shows how he will be extremely important to the club over the coming years.”

McGrath was understood to have gained some level of interest from rival clubs, with the Bombers onballer now turning his back on any external advances.

Essendon will clash with Gold Coast at Marvel Stadium on Sunday afternoon as they look to extend their strong run of form.
