St Kilda captain Jack Steele has opened up on Ross Lyon's time at the club so far, crediting his senior coach with getting him into the game against Carlton upon his return from injury.

Steele revealed to SEN on Thursday that Lyon asked Steele to go to Patrick Cripps in the second half of the game to slow down his impact, as well as immerse Steele into the game.

Steele also revealed that upon Lyon's arrival to the club, the former Fremantle coach encouraged the skipper to get fitter and lose weight to suit the club's desired running capacity.

"Ross (Lyon) asked me to go to Cripps in the second half, just to try and get me in the game but also slow his impact on the game down, which I feel like I was able to do, we were able to get on top a little bit inside and sort of run the Blues off their legs and come away with the win," Steele told SEN's Sportsday.

"I suppose he didn't know a lot bout me when he first came into the club. I know for me and Seb Ross, we weren't heavy coming back from the off-season, but we were sitting at about 90 kilos, that's what we played at last year.

"The first thing he said to us was we want to be a running team and we need you to be a little bit lighter.

"That's just one example and I suppose the rest of the leaders would have their own, but he's just so demanding and a bloke you don't really want to let down."

Steele ended the game on Saturday with 19 disposals and five tackles in his third game for the season.

St Kilda currently sit first on the ladder at 5-1 and will take on Port Adelaide at Marvel Stadium tomorrow at 7:50pm (AEST).
