Greater Western Sydney star midfielder has urged teammate Josh Kelly to stay at the Giants beyond this season.
Kelly has been the subject of several big money offers from Victorian clubs throughout 2017, however, Shiel says he is "extremely confident" that Kelly will stay at the New South Wales-based club.
“Josh is really enjoying his time up here. I’m extremely confident that he’s going to commit to the footy club and we see him a big part of the Giants' future,” Shiel said on SEN Breakfast on Wednesday morning.
“I’m really close mates with him, he’s got some really close mates at this footy club and we all love Josh and obviously he’s an outstanding player.
“We understand he is in high demand in Melbourne but we would really like him to stay at our footy club.”
With Kelly averaging 29.3 disposals, 6.9 tackles and 5.2 clearances per game, that certainly comes as no surprise.
The 24-year-old Shiel has spent his entire career at the Giants and stated being so close to a Grand Final last year reaffirmed his commitment to the club after signing a two-year contract extension earlier this season.
“I’ve been at this footy club since the start and being so close to playing in the Grand Final last year played a really big part in committing again,” he said.
“The best chance I thought of doing that was going to be at the Giants.“I’m really enjoying my time up here in Sydney and I don’t want to be leaving Sydney unsatisfied.”
Shiel will play his 100th game this Saturday against Brisbane and has said he's happy with his form so far this season.
“We’ve got a reasonably young midfield playing every week at the moment so there is a responsibility to be a leader alongside Callan (Ward) and Josh Kelly in the midfield there,” he added.
“I think I’m executing well so far this year, but obviously when it comes to those games against Carlton and St Kilda when we’re really expected to perform a bit better we dropped our game.
“That’s on the leaders to make sure it doesn’t happen again this year.”
As for Kelly, the star midfielder remains in doubt for their round 14 clash after jarring his hip in a training session during the Giants' bye weekend last Saturday.
"We'll give him every opportunity to get up," Cameron said.
"We know how important he is. He's had an outstanding year and he's in great form, but if he's not close to being right, then we're not going to risk him.
"We're pretty bullish about his chances, but we need another 48 hours to assess that, and he'll make a good assessment of his own body as well."
