Hawthorn have decided to place injured duo Jack Gunston and Will Day in cotton wool for the rest of the season.

The club announced on Wednesday that the pair won't return to Alastair Clarkson's side in 2021 as they continue in their respective recoveries.

Gunston has been limited to just the one showing this year after requiring back surgery last December, making his return to the AFL in Round 7 before facing further setbacks.

The veteran forward and reigning Hawks best and fairest will now sit out the remainder of the season to aid his recovery.

Day has been battling an ankle injury sustained in his side's Round 15 clash with Greater Western Sydney.

After being in contention to make a late season return, the promising defender will join Gunston in being put on ice.

Day played just the five matches for the Hawks in 2021 after missing matches between rounds 3-12 with an ankle injury sustained against Richmond.

The injured pair join Changkuoth Jiath, Jarman Impey and James Sicily in being ruled out for the rest of the 2021 season at Hawthorn.
