Carlton captain Brianna Davey has had her worst fears confirmed, after scans revealed she ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament during the Blues' win over GWS on Friday night.

The 23-year-old will now miss the rest of the AFLW season, and is set for surgery in the coming weeks.

Davey suffered the injury late in the fourth quarter of Carlton's win, with Carlton's Head of Football Andrew McKay confirming the news to the Blues' website.

“Bri is an incredibly tough competitor so when we saw her go down in pain in that fourth quarter on Friday night, we knew it could be serious,” McKay told carltonfc.com.au

“She is clearly a star contributor in our backline, but her absence will now be an opportunity for our other AFLW defenders to step up on-field.

“While we are incredibly disappointed for her, the Club will fully support Brianna in her rehabilitation process and we look forward to seeing her back out on the field in the navy blue for the start of the AFLW season next year.”

Star forward Tayla Harris also suffered an injury on Friday, and is now in doubt for Carlton's round three clash against her former side Brisbane after picking up a knock to her shoulder.
