Hawthorn star forward Jarryd Roughead has been ruled out indefinitely after having a melanoma removed form his lip on Wednesday.

Roughead had surgery yesterday after test results from a lesion on his lip returned as positive for melanoma.

Hawthorn released a statement on the club's website last night, indicating that a return date for Roughead had not been set.

Hawks football operations manager Chris Fagan told Fairfax Media that the 28-year-old was recovering well from the surgery.

“He sent a photo around of himself last night with a bit of a thumbs up,” Fagan said.

“Obviously when these things happen it’s a bit worrying, but he handled the whole thing well and has had good support around him from family, friends and the footy club.”
