Richmond are after an answer from superstar Dustin Martin over the coming weeks regarding his future.

The 25-year-old is out of contract at the end of the current season and is expected to test the market after suggesting earlier this year he would place contract negotiations on hold until the end of the season.

Richmond CEO Brendon Gale said the Tigers would love an indication from Martin and his manager Ralph Carr about what his plans are, and told ABC Radio on Saturday he's hoping to receive an answer soon.

"We're probably approaching that time where we'd like to get a sense of where their heads are at because we do have to plan (our) salary cap and other players, so I guess we're approaching that point," Gale said.

"They’ve (Martin and Carr) indicated they’d like to hold off until the end of the year and that’s sort of where it’s at."

The midfielder is one of the Brownlow favourites in 2017, and is also one of the hottest players out of contract alongside Fremantle's Nat Fyfe and GWS' Josh Kelly.

Richmond have been confident in Martin's desire to stay at Tigerland all season long, and Gale says it certainly helps given the Tigers have an edge over other suitors.

"He's a restricted free agent … so we've always got the right to match any offer," Gale said.

"We do have that in the background but I'm fairly confident it won't come to that."
