Carlton defender Liam Stocker has had his return to senior footy cut short after suffering a shoulder injury that saw him subbed out of the game.

Stocker was making his first appearance of the season for the Blues after suffering a syndesmosis injury in the pre-season that saw him miss the start of the year.

Carlton coach Michael Voss said after his team's win that the injury might be on the lighter end of the scale, with the club to assess the damage in the coming days.

"We'll assess that," Voss said post-match.

"We feel like it's not too bad but like all these, we will take a couple of days to assess it and give you the information from there."

Running defender Zac Williams looms as the likely inclusion for Stocker after he was a late withdrawal from the win.

Williams missed with a sore achilles, but Voss said that he was confident the dashing ball user would be back for Carlton's clash with Adelaide next Sunday.

"Zac was a bit tight through his calf from training on Thursday so we assessed that this morning and it just wasn't sound enough really to warrant taking the risk," Voss said.

Williams is likely to be joined by star midfielder George Hewett next week after the former Swan missed with a corked calf.
