Former Hawk Sam Mitchell will be returning to Victoria to continue his career in AFL coaching, according to AFL.com.au's Damian Barrett.

Having spent the past two seasons with the West Coast Eagles, 2017 as a player in the side and this season as an assistant coach, Mitchell has notified Eagles officials that will indeed be leaving.

Mitchell is widely considered a senior coach in waiting after a stellar 329-game career that included four premierships, five best and fairests and the Brownlow Medal in 2012.

He has been an integral part of the Eagles' 2018 campaign, in a season where the side are challenging for a top two ladder finish.

It is tipped that many Victorian clubs will be left asking for his services.
