Ross McQuillan is close to joining Essendon with the 20-year-old Irishman set to be on an AFL list next season.

After an impressive showing at the 2018 AFL Europe Combine, McQuillan was on the radar of a number of clubs, with Essendon and Richmond said to be leading the race for the youngster.

However, according to AFL.com.au, McQuillan is leaning towards joining the Bombers, who already have Conor McKenna on their books.

McQuillan ran the fastest 20m time at the combine, and is reportedly a strong kick on both feet, as well as an aggressive ball-user.

If McQuillan joins an AFL list ahead of the 2020 season, he'll likely be alongside the deepest list of Irish talent in the league.

14 Irishmen are currently on AFL lists which is a record, while Barry O'Connor signed for Sydney last month and will take the tally to 15 next season, regardless of McQuillan's decision.
