Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon has already ruled out seven teams from competing in this season's finals series, after just seven rounds of footy.

Lyon put a line through Carlton, Brisbane, St Kilda, Essendon, Gold Coast and Fremantle, while also suggesting the Bulldogs were only "half-alive."

โ€œSo thereโ€™s 11 or so teams that can fight it out for the top eight spot,โ€ Lyon's co-host Tim Watson asked?

โ€œAt this stage,โ€ Lyon replied.

That means 11 teams remain, who as it stands are incidentally the top 11 on the table through seven rounds.

If the season was to begin today, Hawthorn and North Melbourne would be the two new sides playing September footy, replacing Port Adelaide and Essendon from 2017.
