Former star midfielder Nick Dal Santo says football clubs will be forced to include money into their football department to supplement the revamped MRP system.

With failed appeals now costing clubs $10,000, which is included as part of the club’s soft cap, a series of failed appeals could cause clubs serious financial hardship.

“I don’t think a club should be fined or lose a sum of money for trying to defend a players actions,” Dal Santo told SEN Afternoons.

“Clubs and players just want their voices heard because otherwise they never get that. Robbie Gray wanted to go into a hearing and say ‘this was my intention, this is what I was thinking and this occurred’.

“For a tribunal to say they disagree, then also we want $10,000 dollars as well, really worries me because I don’t think you should be fined for voicing your opinion and defending yourself.”

Dal Santo acknowledged that a penalty had to be in place to ensure clubs did not just appeal every sanction, but said the current system was not the answer.

The consensus is that clubs will only appeal decisions to star players, and that those lesser names will not be afforded the same luxury.
