Melbourne's Kysaiah Pickett has shown a tremendous display of faith after turning his back on a move back to his home state, penning a fresh nine-year extension worth around $12 million to remain at the club until the end of 2034.
Pickett has long been linked with a move to Fremantle, while Port Adelaide has always watched his movements closely in the past few years.
However, the 24-year-old, who was already contracted until the end of 2027, has recommitted to the Demons, making him the longest-contracted player in the AFL.
It is a huge coup for Melbourne after a trade with the Dockers gained momentum in last year's trade period, and has seemingly persisted throughout this year.
Pickett's links with Fremantle come through his close relationships with Quinton Narkle and Isaiah Dudley, which have been dismissed.
Despite missing the opening few weeks of the season through suspension, the right-footer has forced himself into All-Australian calculations, kicking 21 goals from 10 games, playing through the midfield and up forward.
"I'm really happy and proud to be continuing my career in the red and blue," Pickett said.ย
"I love my teammates and my coaches, and I can't wait to see what we can achieve together in the years to come. We have shared some special memories over the past few years here, and I'm excited for what we can achieve next.ย
"The club has shown so much care for me and my family, and I can't thank them enough for their support. I would also like to thank the Demon fans for all the love.ย
"I get to live out my childhood dream, playing footy for the oldest club at the MCG, and I'm excited and grateful to be a Demon for life.ย
"I'm so grateful to have Ardu and Belleny on this journey with me. Everything I do is for my family, and I just want to inspire my little brothers and my nephews, too."
Melbourne's list manager Tim Lamb was thrilled following Pickett's recommitment.
"As one of the most dynamic players in the game, we are very excited that Kozzy has chosen to commit to Melbourne for the long term," Lamb said.
"Kozzy is a special talent, and to have him sign a seven-year extension shows the belief he has in where we are heading. He loves the club and his teammates, and he wants to help drive sustained success for this group.
"He is an excitement machine, with his pressure, speed and goal kicking ability making him a critical part of the team and someone who our fans love.
"In addition to his natural talent, Kozzy is incredibly committed to getting the best out of himself. Week in, week out, he has been able to perform at a high level, and that's a testament to the work he puts in behind the scenes.ย
"We look forward to Kozzy being a big part of our future, and are excited for this next chapter with him, his partner Ardu and their daughter Belleny."
Pickett's new deal surpasses Fremantle midfielder Hayden Young (2033), while Gold Coast's Mac Andrew's current contract could see triggers hit that would take him to 2034.
