Melbourne has announced the re-signing of first-year forward Matt Jefferson, who has added two years to his contract to now be signed with the Demons until the end of the 2026 season.
The two-year extension comes without an AFL game to Jefferson's name, with Melbourne more than satisfied with the teenager's output at VFL level so far this year.
Jefferson is averaging 1.3 goals, 7.8 disposals and 3.4 marks per game for Casey in 2023 as he looks to gain more exposure to senior football.
Melbourne has moved quickly to lock in the 19-year-old to a new deal beyond 2024, with Jefferson now signed for an additional two years.
โWe are really pleased to have MJ commit for a further two seasons.โฏHe has shown in his first year that he has all the tools to be a long-term player for our club,โ Melbourne list boss Tim Lamb said in a club statement.ย
โHis performances at VFL level have been really exciting and whilst his talent is evident to everyone, his application to his training has also been first class.ย
โHe is a really important part of our future, and we look forward to seeing his continued development.โ
Jefferson becomes the latest Demon to recommit to the club, joining the likes of Kysaiah Pickett, Trent Rivers, Alex Neal-Bullen, Judd McVee and Kade Chandler in showing their faith in the red and blue in 2023.
Melbourne selected Jefferson with their opening selection at last year's National Draft, with the Oakleigh Chargers product firming as one of the top tall forwards in his class.
Jefferson is likely to suit up for Casey this weekend when the Demons clash with Williamstown on Sunday afternoon.
