Melbourne have locked in their leadership group for the 2022 season, with Max Gawn and Jack Viney keeping their positions as captain and vice-captain respectively.

The established duo look to set the Dees up for more success in the coming years after their impressive premiership-winning 2021 campaign.

Gawn took on the role as Melbourne captain in 2020, and is approaching his third year in the role. Viney also boasts three years of experience as co-captain, previously working alongside former captain Nathan Jones.

Melbourne's General Manager of AFL Football Performance Alan Richardson has previously stated his approval of the pair, commenting on how pivotal the two players are in the team's success during the club's leadership announcement in 2021

“They are not only great football players but they are also outstanding people and no one wants success for this footy club more than those two men,” Richardson stated.

“As a collective, we feel the streamlined approach of having a captain and vice-captain worked really well last year.

"Pleasingly, this view was reinforced through the player voting process where both Max and Jack were the two standout candidates."

Gawn and Viney are also supported by many of the Dees' most established players, who are more than capable of acting as leaders and role models on the field.

With Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver running the midfield, Jake Lever in defence and Ben Brown making his mark in the forward line, it's safe to say the Dees' are in no shortage of experienced players capable of stepping up to be a leader when called upon.

Melbourne will begin their premiership defence against fellow 2021 grand finalists the Western Bulldogs next Wednesday at the MCG.
