Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon has slammed the Western Bulldogs for some of their on-field selections against GWS in their 82-point loss to the Giants on Saturday.
The Dogs were beaten badly all around the park and were handed their heaviest loss under coach Luke Beveridge.
Lyon spoke on SEN Breakfast on Monday morning and ripped into Beveridge's selections, suggesting the side they played were never going to trouble the Giants.
โThey put a side out there (Western Bulldogs) on the park that was counter to what modern day footy demands,โ Lyon told SEN Breakfast.
โThey (GWS) would be sitting there today, not many ice-baths - the Giants. They did as they wanted, and I think theyโll be an extraordinary team.
โThereโs something not right for the Dogs. Their forward line was dysfunctional, and their backline? Zaine Cordy found himself on Toby Greene โ the most dangerous, smart, elusive forward and (heโs) trailing in against him, and then Bailey Williams couldnโt get it done.โ
The Dogs stuck with captain Easton Wood in the forward line, although the experiment didn't seem to work, as he barely got himself into the contest.
Lyon also said Jackson Trengove and Jordan Roughead failed to impose themselves on the game.
"On the face of it playing Easton Wood forward isnโt working, Trengove couldnโt touch the footy. Roughead no presence,โ he said.
โTheir best forward was a kid called Billy Gowers who debuted, who had real energy and spunk, and had a crack.
โThey fall into the modern day trap of exiting and vacating their forward line, running their players out when the ball leaves the area, so anytime they did get some run out of the backline they had no-one to kick to.โ
Lyon said the Dogs also struggled in the backline, with a number of their more senior players failing to stand up when they were needed.
The Bulldogs will be hoping to put the GWS loss behind them on Sunday, when they host the Eagles.
