Matthew Lloyd says Brodie Grundy is the best all-around player in the AFL, citing his ability to run with the midfield as a part of the chain as an asset that sets him apart from other bigs.

“No other ruckman can run with him,” says Lloyd.

Lloyd made these comments as a part of his AFL video series revealing his top 20 players in the league.

A couple of Patrick’s came in second and third on Lloyd’s list. The Essendon legend had Carlton’s Patrick Cripps second, calling his game against the Lions in Round 19 “the greatest individual game that anyone has played this season".

As for Patrick Dangerfield, Lloyd noted the big Geelong midfielder’s aerial skills and strength as attributes that set him apart in a league full of talented mids.

Following Danger was another big midfielder. Lloyd called Marcus Bontempelli “super tough on the inside," and applauded his emerging talent for breaking away from taggers.

Rounding out the top five was another surprise pick. Lloyd says that in lieu of the Alex Rance injury, Dylan Grimes has become “the best key defender in the game.” The high watermark of his season, Lloyd says, came in Port Adelaide in Round 4.

“They had heaps of players out that night, he marked absolutely everything in a tight game.”

Grimes is the only player from the top five playing in the grand final, and will likely be coming up against Coleman Medallist Jeremy Cameron.
