Draft picks could be traded on draft night as early as next year, as talks are increasing to allow the exercise to be included in the 2018 National Draft.

AFL.com.au believe the AFL's player movement working group spoke about the issue on Wednesday in a meeting, with the group made up of club list managers and AFL officials.

The AFL are open to the idea in 2018 should it be practicable, and have also discussed trading players who have been drafted that night to other clubs.

Both of those exercises are frequent in drafts overseas, with the AFL seemingly looking to the NFL and NBA models for guidance in how to make the draft more appealing to viewers.

For example, if a club doesn't have a selection in the first round but has two second round picks and wants to trade up based on who another side has selected, they could trade their two second rounders to the club for the player they just acquired.

Clubs are using the current academy and father-son bidding system to aid their arguments for the inclusion of live trading, suggesting that given clubs can already steal players from one another it wouldn't be that big a leap to introduce trades.

Carlton list manager Stephen Silvagni was a crucial component of the group meeting on Wednesday, after travelling to America in April for the NFL Draft.

The 2017 AFL National Draft will be held in Sydney on Friday, November 24.
