Brisbane defender Darcy Gardiner has been taken to hospital after dislocating his elbow in the first quarter of the Lions' clash with Essendon at Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Gardiner, who already had his arm strapped, injured his elbow while trying to put an arm out to halt the run of Essendon's Orazio Fantasia.

He was taken straight to the rooms and joined by paramedics, before being taken to hospital midway through the second quarter.

Gardiner has played all but one game this season, averaging 13 disposals and 4.8 marks per game.

The Lions have stuck with the Bombers thus far, trialing by just five points at the main break.
