Sydney ruckman Kurt Tippett has been withdrawn from the Swans' side to face Carlton at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.

Tippett has been replaced in the side by youngster James Rose, who has been brought into the squad for his first game of the season.

Sydney assistant coach Stuart Dew said Tippett has failed to overcome a hip problem, with Rose and Sam Reid to help each other take care of the ruck duties.

"Kurt was a bit sore in his hip so he is out and James Rose comes into the team for his first opportunity of the year," Dew said.

"We will be looking for some energy from Rosey and Reidy to pinch hit in the ruck."

Carlton will go into the match unchanged.
